Fervo Energy and Crusoe Energy began commissioning a 50-megawatt enhanced geothermal power plant in Nevada on Monday, connecting electricity directly to an artificial intelligence compute campus designed for large-scale GPU workloads. The partners said the site will reach full operations by September, offering a template for data centers that cannot secure grid interconnection in congested markets.
Enhanced geothermal systems drill deep wells and inject water to fracture hot rock, producing steam for turbines without the geographic constraints of traditional hydrothermal resources. Fervo demonstrated a commercial pilot in Utah in 2023; the Nevada deployment scales that approach for always-on compute loads.
Why Geothermal for AI
Data-center operators face rising opposition to gas-fired backup generation and multi-year waits for transmission upgrades. Geothermal provides baseload power with capacity factors exceeding 90 percent — attractive for training clusters that run continuously for weeks.
Crusoe, known for flare-gas-powered mobile modules, is pivoting toward stationary campuses with verified clean attributes. Hyperscalers under net-zero commitments increasingly require power purchase agreements with traceable renewable sources, not unbundled renewable energy credits alone.
Economics
Fervo executives said levelized costs at the Nevada site compete with combined-cycle gas in the western United States when carbon pricing and interconnection delays are factored in. Capital intensity remains high: drilling accounts for most project cost, and reservoir performance varies by geology.
Crusoe will operate the compute layer, selling capacity to enterprise customers and potentially cloud resellers. Pricing will reflect power certainty premiums over grid-connected sites subject to curtailment.
Regulatory Context
Nevada regulators fast-tracked permits citing economic development priorities. Environmental groups supported geothermal relative to gas but demanded groundwater monitoring protocols. Federal geothermal leasing reforms under the 2025 energy package simplified federal land access.
Scalability Questions
Geothermal resources are geographically limited compared with solar and wind. The pilot proves technical integration with AI workloads; it does not solve power needs for the hundreds of gigawatts hyperscalers plan globally. Success may nonetheless unlock dozens of similar sites across the Great Basin.
For the AI industry, the project links two narratives — compute hunger and climate accountability — in a single physical plant. Whether customers pay premiums for geothermal-backed inference will test how much sustainability matters in procurement beyond marketing slides.
