WWE SummerSlam 2026 opened with a statement of intent. Oba Femi defeated Brock Lesnar inside Hell in a Cell in the main event of Night 1 at Wembley Stadium in London, capturing the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. The match was the first time the Hell in a Cell structure had headlined SummerSlam in six years, and it delivered beyond expectations.

Hell in a Cell lives up to its name

For 38 minutes, Femi and Lesnar exchanged blows that shook the steel structure. Lesnar hit three German suplexes and an F5 in the opening five minutes, but Femi kicked out at two. The Nigerian powerhorse answered with a powerbomb through a table, then drove Lesnar through the cell wall with a running spear. The crowd in London stood for the final ten minutes, and the noise never dropped.

Lesnar opened a cut on Femi's forehead with a steel chair in the fifth minute. Femi returned the favor by wrapping the chair around Lesnar's throat and stomping on it. At one point, Lesnar slammed the cell door into Femi's face, creating a deep gash above his left eye. The referee, Dan Engler, allowed both men to continue as the match had no disqualification and no countout.

Both men used weapons borrowed from the announcers' table, including a kendo stick and a fire extinguisher. Lesnar sprayed the extinguisher into Femi's eyes, then hit an F5 onto the exposed floorboards. Femi still kicked out, and the crowd erupted with a "this is awesome" chant that continued for a full minute.

Femi's historic win

Femi finally sealed the win with an F5 of his own, the same move Lesnar has used to end careers for two decades. He crashed Lesnar onto a steel chair that lay in the middle of the ring, covered him, and scored the pinfall. The victory made Femi the first Nigerian-born world champion in WWE history. He held the title above his head while the London crowd sang along to his theme song for nearly three minutes.

Speaking after the match, Femi said he promised his family he would deliver. "This is for every person who crossed the ocean for a better life," he said. "I carried their dreams with me into that cell." The 28-year-old from Delta State trained in Lagos before moving to the United States. He won the NXT Championship twice and had not lost a singles match on the main roster since his call-up in January 2026.

Lesnar's respect

Lesnar, who had not lost a pay-per-view match since 2020, showed rare emotion after the bell. He raised Femi's hand and whispered a few words. At the post-match press conference, Lesnar told reporters, "He beat me clean. I have nothing left to prove. That kid is the real deal." Lesnar also confirmed that his contract expires at the end of the year, but he refused to discuss retirement.

WWE analyst Sam Roberts called the match a changing of the guard. "Oba Femi just did what no one has done in a decade," Roberts said on the SummerSlam post-show. "He outworked Lesnar in every category, including pure strength. This is the passing of the torch, but at the same time, Femi earned it. He did not receive it."

Night 1 other action

Earlier in the night, Rhea Ripley retained the Women's World Championship against Liv Morgan in a street fight that featured a kendo stick and a trash can. The Undisputed WWE Tag Team Titles changed hands when the Usos beat the Bloodline and the New Day in a three-way tag team match. The finish came when Jey Uso hit his signature splash on Xavier Woods, then pinned him while Jimmy Uso blocked the Bloodline from interfering.

In a surprise appearance, John Cena came to the ring to announce he will enter the Men's Royal Rumble in January. Cena said 2027 will be his last full year in WWE. The announcement drew a standing ovation from the London crowd. Cena did not name a potential opponent for his farewell tour.

SummerSlam Night 2 takes place on Sunday at the same venue. The scheduled main event is Cody Rhodes defending the WWE Universal Championship against Roman Reigns. The card also includes an intercontinental title ladder match that will feature Ilja Dragunov, Dominik Mysterio, Sheamus, and three other competitors.

With Night 1 in the books, the conversation now turns to Femi's first title defense. No opponent has been confirmed, but Lesnar hinted he may seek a rematch. "I don't run from anyone," Lesnar said. "If the crowd wants it again, we do it again."
