J.J. McCarthy said Wednesday he has no intention of leaving the Minnesota Vikings after the team named Kyler Murray its starting quarterback this week. The decision was "out of my control," McCarthy told reporters, but he remains committed to his teammates and the franchise.
McCarthy Addresses Demotion
McCarthy said he learned of the decision from head coach Sean Payton on Tuesday. He praised Murray's performance in training camp and said the competition pushed both players. "Kyler played great. He deserved the job," McCarthy said. "But this isn't the end for me. I want to be a Viking."
McCarthy also said he had not requested a trade and would not. "I want to stay here and help this team win however I can," he said.
Commitment to Minnesota
McCarthy said he understands the business of football but wants to prove he can be a starter again. He referenced his previous time in Minnesota and the faith the organization showed in him. "I've always loved this city and this fanbase," he said.
General manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah said in a statement that McCarthy is an important part of the roster. "J.J. is a professional in every sense. We value his competitiveness and his character. He makes our team better," Adofo-Mensah said.
Murray also credited McCarthy. "J.J. pushed me every day. I have tons of respect for him," Murray said. "He's a great quarterback and an even better teammate."
What's Next for McCarthy
McCarthy said he will support Murray and prepare as if he is the starter. He said he will use the season to improve. "My story is not over," he said.
He also said he plans to be around the team facility regularly and will help younger players develop. "I want to do whatever it takes to bring a championship to Minnesota," McCarthy said. "That has not changed."
McCarthy's contract runs through 2028, and the Vikings have not indicated any interest in moving him. The backup role offers him a chance to stay in the league and wait for another opportunity if injuries or performance create an opening.
For now, McCarthy said his focus is on the season opener against the Atlanta Falcons. "I'm going to be the best backup in the league," he said. "When my number is called, I'll be ready."
