Sovereign wealth funds from Singapore and the Middle East are investing in geothermal energy projects to power new data centers. The shift comes as standard electrical grids struggle to handle the high power demands of AI computing.
The consortium has committed $8.5 billion to drilling projects in northern Nevada and southwestern Iceland. Unlike wind or solar power, geothermal energy runs constantly, providing a stable source of clean power for compute clusters.
Grid Independence for AI Clusters
AI data centers require gigawatts of power, leading to local concerns about grid reliability. By building dedicated geothermal generators, tech companies can run their servers independently of local municipal grids.
"Power availability is now a major factor in tech investment," says market reporter Ananya Krishnan. "Sovereign funds are securing their own energy supplies to ensure their AI infrastructure can run without grid restrictions."
The first geothermal-powered data center under this program is scheduled to go online in Nevada by late 2027.
