Anthropic received FedRAMP High authorization on Monday for a hardened version of Claude designed to run inside U.S. government Impact Level 5 environments. The designation allows civilian and defense agencies to use the model for summarization, translation, and code assistance on controlled unclassified and secret-tier workloads without routing data to commercial cloud endpoints.
The authorization follows an 18-month evaluation by the Joint Authorization Board and separate reviews by the Defense Information Systems Agency. Anthropic said inference runs on government-managed GPU clusters with model weights delivered through air-gapped update channels reviewed quarterly.
What Agencies Gain
Initial use cases include contract analysis at the General Services Administration, logistics planning at U.S. Transportation Command, and foreign-language triage at the State Department. Each deployment requires human review on outputs that influence procurement decisions or personnel actions.
Officials emphasized that authorization does not permit autonomous decision-making on weapons systems or surveillance targeting. Policy memos require analysts to retain accountability for conclusions drawn from model-assisted research.
Competitive Landscape
OpenAI holds FedRAMP Moderate status for ChatGPT Government but has not completed IL5 certification. Google DeepMind and Microsoft offer classified Azure regions with separate model approvals still pending. Procurement officers said Anthropic's clearance may accelerate sole-source awards for pilot programs through fiscal 2027.
Security Concerns
Civil liberties groups asked whether large language models trained on public internet data can be safely isolated from classified prompts that might enable inference attacks. Anthropic published a red-team report describing output filters and prompt logging, though the full assessment remains classified.
